Vitality Pedigree is my home grown attempt to digitally keep track of all the physical issues that is part of breeding animals. While the traditional pedigree presents names, registrations, titles and ancestors, it fails to help with physically improving the breed or species of the animals in question unless you are personally knowledgeable about each and every animal. I set out to create a health focused pedigree.

I wanted something that would show me at a glance the structure of each animal in the pedigree, help me determine the best breeding pairs to avoid doubling on faults as well as target any individuals who may throw progeny with recurring medical problems.

At first I thought in terms of dogs (wonder why…) but also having Florida White rabbits, I thought, why not use it to improve them as well?

It’s cloud based so it doesn’t matter what OS you have. If you can get online, you can use it. It’s subscription based, so if you find it doesn’t fit your needs, you haven’t spent a fortune (been there, done that). And to be extra sure you find it helpful, you get 30 days free to try it out. WARNING: While this will work on the Safari browser, it will get glitchy. USE CHROME. ’nuff said.

There are two basic areas: The stick figure that for each dog (oops, sorry, animal) you can grade different parts of their anatomy, so you can see at a glance where you want to improve your next generation and avoid doubling up on faults. The second area records genetic, medical or breed standard areas of concern.  So if suddenly you start seeing a trend of a particular health issue it will assist in targeting the source.

You can compare any two animals whether for possible breedings or for example, if you are reducing your numbers of animals in your kennel, two males or two females to dtermine wjhhich is the more desirable to keep.

You can add breedings and the resulting litter so those animals are now part of the database.
